Choosing the Right Light Fixture

by Linda Carter

I have a restored farmhouse in a traditional style. The living room flows into the dining room, and then into the kitchen. All ceiling fixtures can be seen from all three rooms. I have an antique gas/electric light fixture in both the living room and dining room in polished brass, which I will probably never replace. I am updating the kitchen and want mini-pendant lights above the island. I wanted to do oil rubbed bronze pendants to match the granite more closely, but will this look out of place given that the other fixtures are polished brass? Keep in mind again, you can see all fixtures from the different rooms.

Giorgina's Answer: I understand your concerns with the oil rubbed bronze pendants looking a little out of sorts. I would keep the style consistent for a uniform look and opt for pendant lights in a polished brass finish. The polished brass pendant light fixtures will not detract from the granite because granite is a beautiful stone that stands out on its own.
