Combining Contemporary Bedroom Furniture with Antiques?

by Michelle
(Vail, AZ)

I am trying to combine two homes. I am working right now on a very small master bedroom. We have black/brown distressed/ straight lines for the bed, dresser and TV armoire. We also have an antique dark wood Edwardian Desk(very ornate, lions carved on the sides) an antique wingback down chair, an old trunk, standing floor mirror, wooden distressed dressing screen, ornate antique cherry wood mirror, framed antique map, water color of beach of pier in pastels. All linens are sage, tans and ivorys. Is there any way at all to make these all work?

Giorgina's Answer: You seem to have a nice collection of interesting furniture pieces and accessories. However, I would not advise putting all of these items in your bedroom because it’s important not to overfurnish your room. Too much furniture will make the room look smaller and too cluttered.

Since you mentioned that you have a very small bedroom, you may wish to exclude some of these furniture pieces and keep only the necessary items. The necessary pieces would include the bed, dresser, and TV armoire. You may wish to consider relocating the desk, chair, old trunk, dressing screen, and art pieces to a different area of the home.

A bedroom is like a sanctuary and should reflect a calm and quiet place to rest and unwind. Also, with less furniture, it will give the impression that your master bedroom is larger. Please remember that less is more.
