Dark Floor with Light Walls?

by Kim
(Cincinnati, OH)

We are doing a beach theme in our basement. However, our floors are already a dark walnut color. My plan is to have a soft/muted white wainscoting. Will the dark floor and light walls be a major disaster? What can I do to blend the 2 colors together better?

Giorgina's Answer: Although decorating presents it challenges, what you are planning will not result in a disaster. Your floors sound quite nice. They will definitely work with the wainscoting.

Wainscoting half way up the walls is representative of the New England look. Color can make a dramatic difference in bringing together the elements of your desired style.

Consider painting the walls using cool and soothing colors, such as light yellow or light blue, or you may use a simple beach themed stencil or wall borders/murals with a beach theme to help tie in the wainscoting. To further add to this design theme, incorporate the use of sisal mats or rugs that feature coastal scenery. This will give the room a warm feel while providing a cozy atmosphere.

Best of luck to you with this fun project.
