Decorating Above the Mantel

by Leh

How do you decorate the space above a mantel that has three framed sections (8"x 30"), (16" x 30"), (8"x30") spaced 3" apart. They are like big empty picture frames (all is painted white, including mantel).

Help! I look at it everyday and don't have a clue. My style is Traditional/Eclectic.

Thank you!

Giorgina's Answer: I believe what you are referring to is an ornate wall molding. These provide you with wonderful decorating options.

Here are some ideas for these lovely wall moldings:

-You may incorporate framed art within each space.

-You could hang wallpaper in each space and essentially frame it. A nice wallpaper to consider is one in a Damask pattern

-You could simply paint them in color(s) you like. Consider painting the border of the wall molding in a different color from the inside of the molding to add interest.

-You could hang a mirror in the center molding while hanging art on each side of the mirror.

-Another idea is to install a wall sconce on the far left and far right moldings and hang art in the center.

As you can see, there are a variety of things you can do. The beauty about decorating is that it is an expression of you and gives you the chance to be creative.
