The Difference between an Elongated and Round Toilet

Before searching for a seat, it’s important to establish whether your toilet bowl is elongated or round.  Although most residential toilet bowls are round, some homes have elongated bowls. 

Round bowls take up less space and are ideal for smaller bathrooms.  An elongated bowl is approximately two inches longer than a round bowl.

To help you determine whether you have a round toilet or an elongated toilet, consider taking a quick, simple measurement.  You want to measure from the center front of the bowl to the center of the hinge post holes.  In the United States, the standard distance between the hinge post holes is 5 ½”.  
 

• Round bowls measure approximately 16 ½” long.

• Elongated bowls measure approximately 18 ½” long.
