Dual Purpose Room Has New Homeowner Stumped
by Emily Swiss

How can I decorate a combined dining/living room without each room losing function, but not over crowding the relatively small space? The only thing I am certain of is my color scheme..... yellow and red. The wall color was just done, but the curtains can go if needed! I am a single mom/new homeowner so I do have to keep my budget in mind, unfortunately! Thanks.
Giorgina's Answer: Thank you for providing a picture, it was very helpful. One of the most important things when decorating is defining the function of the space. Given that your dining area is relatively small, you may wish to consider a small round dining table (of course, budget permitting). You will be able to place the table under the chandelier and still have room to comfortably move around the table. There are great furniture finds to be had at garage sales or via the internet. If you have a painting that you feel would complement the dining room, then you may hang it on the wall next to your dining room table.
Also, it appears that there is a secretary desk in the dining room, which confuses the function of the space a bit. If you are able to afford a small sideboard or cabinet to store dishes, glasses, and other kitchen items, that would look lovely. If you can, add accessories on top of the cabinet, such as, a photo frame, a sculpture, a vase with faux flowers, or a candle holder. Adding things that are near and dear to you gives it a personal touch and enhances the look of your dining area.
As for the living room, if you have a couch, small coffee table, and an entertainment unit, then that is more than sufficient. A sitting area makes the space intimate and welcoming for family and friends.
