Fireplace

I have your typical brick (some bricks have white in them) fireplace with a gold frame surrounding glass doors. The gold never really looked that great with the fireplace. I'd like to get rid of the gold somehow? Paint it black? But then I'm afraid the fireplace might be too dark as it's at the end of a long room. Any ideas? The attached picture is with a flash, so it looks brighter than it is.
