Flamingo Decorations

Since early times, the flamingo has been appreciated for its graceful, delicate stature, and is best known for resting on one leg. 

Their very social personality and need to be in colonies makes watching them interact fascinating.  These lovely creatures can survive in warm and cold climates. 

They can be found searching for food, such as small insects, crustaceans, and algae in lakes, lagoons, and swamps.  They live in both mountainous areas and the flat lands, but must be near a food source and water. 

The largest group of flamingos is found in East Africa where a single colony consists of more than 1 million members. 

During mating season, pair bonding between one male and one female is strong.  Yet, flamingos have been observed to mate with more than one partner. 

Generally, after mating occurs, the pair remains together to prepare the nest for the egg.  They alternate keeping the egg warm and safe for 30 days until it hatches. 

Baby flamingos are fed crop milk that the parents produce instead of regurgitated food, which is what other birds feed their young. 

Flamingos can take off rapidly achieving 35 miles per hour during flight.  Their ability to fly hundreds of miles a day between different locations in search of food is remarkable. 

Their journey takes place during the evening, which explains why many of us never see them.  They have a life expectancy of 25 to 30 years, with some living up to 50 years in captivity.
