To further appreciate the ladybug, let’s review some interesting facts.  

Ladybugs are also referred to as “lady beetles” or, in Europe, “ladybird beetles.” 

There are approximately 5,000 different species of these insects and not all of them share similar food choices since some ladybug species prefer to eat plants instead of plant eaters. 

Many people are drawn to ladybug decorations because of their vibrant colors, oval-shaped dome bodies, and distinctive spots. 

However, putting looks aside, these insects are quite useful to farmers and help protect crops because most ladybugs voraciously consume plant-eating insects, such as aphids. 

Ladybugs lay hundreds of eggs in the colonies of aphids and other plant-eating pests.  When the eggs hatch, the ladybug larvae immediately begin to feed and by the end of its three to six week life, a ladybug may consume about 5,000 aphids.

Ladybugs are unappealing to predators since they can secrete a fluid from joints in their legs which gives them a foul taste.  A threatened ladybug may play both dead and secrete the unappetizing substance in order to protect itself.  Their distinct colors are a likely reminder to any animal that has tried to eat their kind before that they should think twice.

Lastly, the myth that all ladybugs are female is simply not true!  As a matter of fact, the term, “ladybug” refers to both the male and female gender.  The only physical difference is that the males are smaller than the females.
