Rental with 70's Paneling

by Kristin
(San Diego, CA)

We have a rental with 1970s paneling and teal wall-to-wall carpeting. That might say it all. In addition, there is no entry hall, and it has an open floor plan with both kitchen and dining area visible from the first step inside. I have an ivory leather couch, wood queen Anne style coffee table and full-length (to the ceiling) curtains in the living area. I have an antique chair that I plan to have covered in ivory denim or velvet later on. I have a round oak dining table with modern white wood and chrome chairs. I use an antique dresser as a buffet, with a funny blue rooster lamp. The breakfast bar has a pair of small yellow hanging lights from Ikea. There could be better natural light/bigger windows, but it's okay. I have some more traditional gold accessories, like a pair of wall sconces and an oval baroque mirror from Italy, but am not sure how to use them. Thanks so much!

Giorgina's Answer: It seems like you have a variety of styles that come together in this room. From your description, it appears that you have a Victorian style because of your ivory couch and Queen Anne coffee table. I believe that the Baroque mirror and wall sconces would compliment the couch and Queen Anne table. You may wish to consider hanging the mirror behind the sofa with the sconces on each side of the mirror.
