Rustic Decorating

by Giorgina Devereaux

Rustic decorating and furniture add charm, style, interest, and texture to a home. Although Rustic used to be comparable to cheap and worn, this style is now considered sophisticated and en vogue.

To incorporate Rustic furnishings in your home, consider adding it in small amounts since it is very textural.

A roomful of this furniture may be a bit much, but if a few pieces are added, it gives each item the opportunity to stand out and shine.

To add warmth to rustic seating pieces, consider placing cushions and pillows on the chairs. This will soften the look of the chairs and add comfort.

Also, the fabric will tie the Rustic pieces in with other existing elements in the room.

It’s the just the thing for a Fourth of July family picnic or a cozy Christmas dinner table set with a center piece basket of evergreens.

To accentuate other areas, consider adding Rustic accent pieces such as tables, mirrors, or a coat rack in guestrooms or powder rooms. In doing so, these smaller areas can be part of the Rustic style.

You can also make outdoor spaces rustic by surrounding arbors, benches, trellis pieces, and chairs with plants and gardens.
