Skateboard Decorby Giorgina Devereaux Skateboard decor is not your typical home decor. And that's the way it's supposed to be. Whether you're a skater yourself, or someone who wants to decorate for a skater, you're probably going to be pleasantly surprised by just how much available skateboard decor and decorations are available these days. And really, few things are as cool as a room dedicated to skateboards. For someone who is into that hobby and lifestyle, the room becomes an extension of that person, just like it is for every other room in your home. The skater lifestyle is very visual, which lends itself well to room decor. Merchants have also picked up on this, making it a very profitable niche they've been able to carve out and cater to.  And all of this is good news for anyone
interested in skateboard decor.Decorating a room for a skater shouldn't be a chore, so have fun with it. And if you're a parent, don't fight it. If the skater in your life enjoys this hobby, then let him/her have at it. If you object to the skater decorations, you'll only make the person want it more. But if you embrace it with tons of excitement, you'll ruin the "cool" factor. When it comes to teenagers and young adults, the role of the parent is to back off and let them do what they want to do (within reason). If asked, agree to share in on some of the costs. But neither discourage nor embrace the hobby. Just let them be. They will likely want to decorate their rooms themselves, without asking anyone for help. Skateboard Wall Decorations Walls play a prominent role in skateboard decor. Unlike most types of decor, skateboards do not involve figurines, trinkets, accessories, and little odds and ends you find at your local decor store. Instead, opt for style, themes, and an overall look and feel to the room that lets people know you're a serious skater. And that's where the walls come in. Nowhere is there a more daring, visible space in the room to publicize your skater lifestyle than the bare walls in your room. Here are some ideas of things you can do with walls.  Paint: Skateboard decor is bold and in your face. Go for a brash color
that sticks out like green, red, yellow, orange, or blue. The beauty of skater
decor is that you can pick a different color for each wall, and it will still
look appropriate. You can also combine colors and splash different colors on the
same wall. Look in some of your favorite magazines for ideas, and then be brave
and go for it.Graffiti: Graffiti is an integral component of the skater lifestyle. If you want your room to look authentic, you need to tag things up. Of course, tagging your bare walls would be pretty stupid. It won't just bother your parents (and if you're the parent, the idea of graffiti in your house likely isn't sitting well with you), but it'll also ruin your walls. Yeah, I know, that's the point. But a little compromise is in order. So rather than tagging your walls, buy large poster board, hang it up, and go crazy with your bad self. This will preserve your walls, your relationship with those who live with you, and yet still allow you to bring some authentic skater graffiti to your room. Shelves: A must-have for skateboard decor is actual skateboards. And one cool way to use them is as a bookshelf. Take an old skateboard and attach it to the wall. You can remove the wheels or leave them on, it's up to you. Both ways are acceptable. And there are different ways to attach them to the walls. You can do it lengthwise, but you can also cut off the tail end of the board, and attach the skateboard so that it looks like it's coming through the wall toward you. Again, wheels are optional. Now stack your favorite items on the shelf and admire your work. Murals: Skateboard murals are readily available for your walls, so look around online or at your local mall. Murals do much of the work for you already, making it relatively easy to instantly add skateboard decor to your home. Cool ideas are silhouettes of skaters doing their thing at different angles, or doing some trick jumps.  Art/Posters: It's very easy to find posters of famous skaters, and you
can even add some cool frames. There are also plenty of budding artists offering
wall art related to skateboards, and much of it can be customized to suit your
individual needs. If graffiti and murals sound too daring for you, this is a great option. And as we said earlier, you can do both. Skaters can decorate with a variety of ideas. You could have posters and art on one wall, and paint another, and have graffiti on yet another. Be creative, be different, and don't be afraid to mix things up. Window Treatments: Skateboard oriented window treatments are best left to the stores. You can try to be creative and make your own, but with so many choices readily available on the market, there's really no need. Twenty years ago you were out of luck, but it's a different era today. The major brands have recognized the huge market potential for skateboard decor, so scan their product catalogs and take your pick. Alternatively, you may wish to leave your windows as is, and focus your skateboard decor elsewhere in your room. Remember, you never want to overdo it with any one theme, including skateboards. Too much may be overkill, so choose your decor wisely. Go Faux: Faux walls are very cool, and for skaters, you could get a faux brick wall and it would look great in your room. It might be a little expensive, so don't get your hopes up, but if you can afford it, this is a great idea.  Other Skateboard DecorationsNow that we've got your walls covered, it's time to fill the rest of your room with other skateboard decor. Your walls aren't the only places in your room where you can boast your skater style, so let's now talk about other ways to mark your territory. Metallic: Use metallic liberally. Metallic surfaces go hand in hand with skateboarding, so look at your furniture, lamps, mirrors, stools, benches, chairs, picture frames, garbage cans, etc. If it exists in metallic, then get it and flaunt it. Ceiling: Your ceiling is a wall, too. Decorate it like you did your walls, and you can stare at it whenever you're relaxing in your bed. Murals, graffiti, art, or whatever else you can fit up there. You can also hang things from your ceiling, like old skateboards or helmets. Just don't hang them down too far, because nothing will make you look less cool than smacking your head against the skateboard in front of your friends.  Stickers: If you're allowed, buy some skater stickers and place them
wherever it looks cool. You don't want to ruin the furniture, so try for things
that aren't so permanent. Book covers, shelves (the ones you made out of old
skateboards), posters, lamp shades, and other disposable items and surfaces make
great places to put skater stickers.Bedding: What goes for the window treatments also goes for the bedding. That is, there are lots of skateboard decor themes available at retailers, so you don't necessarily have to create your own. Depending on your age, you might find skater bedding to be a little childish, so use your judgment. If you tone it down on your window treatments and bedding, you can go more overboard on your other skateboard decorations, which may or may not appeal to you. Skateboard Equipment: Think of creative ways to use equipment that skaters use, and then incorporate that equipment into your skateboard decor. For example, wheels can be used as knobs on your dresser drawers or as coat hangers. You can hang knee and elbow pads around the lamps and bed posts, or find other uses for them. Helmets can be hung from the ceiling or attached to the back of your door. Place gloves around your doorknobs. Find any equipment you can, and display it somehow. Magazine Cover: For the ultimate in cool, put yourself on the cover of Thrasher magazine. There are companies who will take your picture and mock up a front cover of almost any magazine you like. Get in your gear and pose for the camera, or bring a picture of yourself in action, and they'll take care of it for you. Blow up this magazine cover in your room and live out your fantasy. Trophies: Need something to put on your skateboard shelf? Trophies make excellent skateboard decor. These trophies can either be ones that you earned, fake ones that you had made with your name, or replicas of famous skater trophies. It doesn't really matter; they just look cool on your shelf.  T-shirts: It's one thing to wear skater shirts, but go one step further
and frame one for your wall. The shirt can be of your favorite celebrity skater,
or even of yourself (do-it-yourself t-shirts are easy to make). This is a
simple, inexpensive way to make your room unique.Bring the back alley inside: Take elements from the street and bring them into your room. We've already discussed graffiti, but you can also use other signature street themes such as a garbage can, the lid to the garbage can, stop signs, street names, shopping carts, fire hydrants, sewage covers, and other industrial equipment to give your room an authentic street feel. Those images remind us of the skater lifestyle, and you want to bring that into your room as much as possible. We've presented you with several skateboard decor ideas for your room. Think about each one and see if you can even come up with some of your own that aren't listed here. Pick a few, decide how much money you have to spend, and then have fun decorating your room.
