social life.
At the end of a long day, it’s nice to come home to a bedroom that is
comfortable, inviting, colorful, and reflects who we are.
You may be asking yourself, “Where do
I start? I don’t know the first thing about decor!” Although teen
bedroom decor can feel a bit intimidating because of the tremendous amount of choices,
it is really not that difficult once you get started. I will provide you with
some decorating ideas that will help you on your journey to making your teenage
bedroom into a very cool oasis.
Interior Decorating Ideas for Teens
Choose
a Theme
One of the most important things is
to have a theme in mind. This will help guide you and give you a sense of
direction.
If you are unsure as to what theme to
choose, then consider exploring
colors,
furniture,
lighting,
rugs,
art, and
accessories that appeal to you.
Be creative and don’t be afraid to incorporate
items that initially, you may feel will not fit in with the rest of your teen bedroom
decor.
The beauty about teen bedroom decor
is that it gives you a chance to express yourself.
Decor is something that is unique and personal to each and every one of us. As
difficult as it may seem, everything will come together, with the result being a
bedroom that is fabulous.
Color
Every bedroom deserves a splash of
color. Color adds an incredible amount of personality to a room, and,
essentially, helps bring it to life. Also, color has an affect on our mood and
is one of the most inexpensive ways to transform your bedroom.
Warm
Colors
Red, yellow, and orange are
considered warm colors since they remind us of the sun and fire.
Other warm colors include red-violet, red-orange, and yellow-orange.
Red: Red symbolizes passion,
energy, romance, and stimulates appetite and conversation.
It is an inviting color.
Yellow: Yellow is cheerful,
sunny, and is linked to intellect and creative energy. It adds warmth and
brightens up dark spaces. A lighter shade of yellow gives the impression that a
small room is larger. In addition to yellow being a cheery color that
symbolizes joy, happiness, knowledge, and wisdom, it helps improve memory.
Painting
a bedroom yellow gives the appearance of natural light and brightens up the
room.
Avoid bold yellow colors that are too overpowering and disrupt the feeling of
the room.
Instead, select lighter shades of yellow.
Orange: Orange is a vibrant
color that symbolizes energy, warmth, and echoes autumn, fall, and summer
colors. Also, orange is known for stimulating appetite and the senses. It is
used as a healing color and widely utilized in spas and relaxation centers.
Cool Colors
Cool colors include blue, green, and
violet. These colors bring to mind water, grass, and plant life.
Blue:
Blue is associated with harmony, peace, and is a cool and calm hue. It also
symbolizes inspiration, genuineness, and spirituality.
The effects of a blue color depending on its shade are that it gives the feeling
that time passes more quickly and aids in sleeping.
A cooler tone, such as a soft blue or
gray, will have a relaxing and calming effect on your bedroom.
It makes an excellent color for teen bedroom decor because it brings feelings of comfort and
serenity.
Green: Green colors are said
to promote concentration and are relaxing. It is a refreshing color and adds a
garden like feel to the indoors.
Violet: Violet is a color
that is known to strengthen and cleanse, and is associated with a peaceful
environment.
Purple: If you prefer a more
romantic tone for your teen bedroom decor, then consider a purple color. Purple colors
have a powerful relationship with our romantic,
sensual, and reflective sides. However, use a bluer purple color to maintain a
balance in helping give the room a restful feel.
Neutral Colors
Neutral colors are the grays and
browns. They are considered neutral because they don’t contrast with much of
anything. If you prefer to avoid very bright colors, then consider a brown
color.
Brown: Brown is a warm and
neutral color that characterizes wholesomeness, earthiness, simplicity, and
friendliness. It is linked to taste and sophistication while at the same time
is confident and calming. Colors such as taupe, beige, or tan make a fabulous
background and aid accompanying colors in appearing richer and brighter.
Furniture
Now that we understand what the
different colors represent, furniture is next on our list. You may decide that
you either want to start from scratch and get new furniture or rearrange
existing pieces in your bedroom.
If you’re considering getting new
furniture, it’s essential to understand what your budget is. Not only will this
teach you invaluable budgeting skills, but it will allow you to learn how to get
the most for your money.
Bed:
Before searching for a bed, it’s important to consider the size of the room.
Is the room large enough to accommodate only a single bed or is a double bed an
option?
If purchasing a bed is not in your
budget, then you may want to consider only changing the bedding ensemble, which
will give the bed a fresh look.
There are many different beds to
choose from. You can choose from beds with wood frames, metal frames, or a
wood/metal combo frame.
The beds come in a variety of finishes, with some having underbed storage
drawers. These drawers come in handy because as a teen, you can never have
enough storage space.
Desk/Chair: Having the right
desk and chair will provide you with a great place to spread out and comfortably
do homework or other projects. You can choose from corner desks that have a
hutch and a file organizer. This will help you save space because you can tuck
the desk in a corner.
Other desks are built with Smart
Technology that is accessible from either side and have drawers that slide both
ways, and a five-plug outlet in the cabinet perfect for charging your cell
phone, iPod, and other electrical items.
Desk Chair: To complete your
desk, consider investing in an ergonomically correct desk chair. It makes all
the difference in the world, especially when sitting for hours. It’s important
to have good back support and that’s where a well designed and comfortable chair
is necessary. Your back will thank you later. These chairs are available in
different styles, colors, with or without arm rests, and with wheels for easy
rolling.
Bookshelves/Shelving: If you
prefer a bookshelf or other shelving for your teen bedroom decor, there are many to choose from in varying
heights, widths, and colors. Some have a couple of drawers and a mirror in
between the shelving, while others just have shelves or rotate giving you four
times the storage in less space. However, a vertical bookshelf is great because
it better utilizes the space height-wise.
Media Storage: Space
permitting, media storage is fabulous for ensuring that you keep all of your
treasured DVDs in one accessible location. Again, the style, color, and size of
the media unit varies depending on what your storage needs are.
Dresser/Armoire: These are
perfect for storing clothing and other personal accessories. If you have space
in your bedroom, a piece of furniture of this sort will add style to your room.
Lounge Seating: Lounge
seating comes in many styles – beanbags (available in funky and fun colors),
ottomans, benches, lounge chairs, butterfly chairs, and a lounge chaise. It’s a
wonderful way to liven up your room while giving your friends a comfortable
sitting area.
Bedside/Accent Table: A
bedside or accent table is a good place for setting an alarm clock and a framed
photo of your loved ones, friends, or treasured moments captured on camera.
Some are available with a drawer and a shelf on the bottom while others have
several drawers and even feature the Smart Technology with a five-plug outlet.
Bedding Essentials
Since your bed is where you recharge
your batteries, it’s important to have the right bedding ensemble. Not only
will it make for a peaceful night’s sleep, but it will enhance the beauty of
your room.
There are many colorful styles to
choose from. The choices are endless. You can pick from solid colors, floral
patterns, zebra patterns, polka dot patterns, paisley patterns, stripes, sports
themes, and more.
You can find sets that include the
sheets, comforter, and throw pillows, or you can mix and match.
Rugs
Not only does it feel nice to walk on
a rug, but a rug adds warmth to any room.
It gives the room a sense of coziness and helps tie together the other elements
of the room.
There is no shortage of rug choices for teen bedroom decor and finding one will not be difficult.
Window Treatments
Window treatments come in a variety
of styles, colors, fabrics, and sizes. You can choose from panel window
treatments, roman shades, cellular shades, mini blinds, shutters, and more. It
all depends on how much privacy and light you want your room to have.
You can also find window treatments
that match your bedding ensemble. To add a nice touch to your windows, consider
hanging the drapes on curtain rods that feature decorative and elegant finials.
Decorative finials are available in

a splash of elegance and beauty.
Lighting

lighting is a must
have for teen bedroom decor. The last thing you want is studying under poor lighting because it puts a
strain on your eyes and can lead to headaches.
To eliminate this problem, it’s worth investing in good lighting. There are
many chic table lamps, floor lamps, and desk lamps to choose from and they come
in a variety of fun colors.
You can also replace your existing ceiling fixture with something that’s
colorful and stylish.
Space Saver Accessories
Closet Organizer: For the
closet, you can pick up handy organizers, such as, hanging shoe racks, shoe
racks that can be placed on the floor of the closet, hanging jewelry bag
holders, small hanging storage organizers with pockets that hang in your closet
or that can be mounted to the wall, and canvas organizers that hold up to 24
shirts, 18 sweaters, and 8 pairs of pants.
You can even get a canvas organizer that consists of drawer compartments ideal
for underwear and socks.
Over-the-Door Rack: Another
fabulous way to maximize space is to hang an over-the-door rack for shoes,
coats, or towels.
Rolling Underbed Shoe Rack:
If you prefer to store your shoes under your bed, you may want to consider a
rolling underbed shoe rack. This rack has eight rungs and can hold up to 12
pairs of shoes.
Storage
Bins: It’s easy to fall behind on staying organized because of keeping up
with the demands of school, extracurricular activities, and making time for
friends and family.
Some items to help you get organized include a file organizer or stackable
bins.
There are some very pretty ones that come in a variety of colors - pink, blue,
green, and brown.
Some are made from materials, such as, plastic or canvas, and have slide-out
panels for custom labels. This will save you time because you will immediately
know which bin contains what.
Bins are a great place to store
important paperwork and precious items. You can stack them in the closet or you
can slide them under your bed. Placing the bins under your bed will free up
more space in your closet.
Storage Drawer Set: Another
great way to store your things is by picking up a storage drawer set (comes with
4 drawers), which is made from plastic. These are spacious storage compartments
and you can stack them on top of one another. It’s perfect for storing clothes
and under garments.
Underbed Box: If bins don’t
suit your style, then consider an underbed box, such as a 3-foot long canvas
underbed chest. It easily fits under your bed and features a clear vinyl top
cover for easy viewing with a nylon zipper.
Art
Frames: If you prefer to do
without the fancy wall decor and want to stick to something simple, consider
hanging framed pictures.
There are many lovely frames to choose from – wood, metal, and plastic.
They come in a variety of colors and sizes. Therefore, finding ones you like
won’t be difficult.
Wall Art: You can also opt to
put up a wall mural, wall decal, or your favorite quote in vinyl lettering.
It’s easy to apply these to the walls and they come in many different colors and
themes, such as, animal silhouettes, flowers, skaters, etc.
Some contain an adhesive backing and others come in an adhesive-free laminated
paper.
Other ideas include
hanging wall plaques, decorative items, or anything that is artistic and
expresses who you are. It’s your chance to be creative.
