Wall Color in Distressed Kitchen?

by Brendae
(Virginia)

I saw an ad on Craigslist for free kitchen cabinets and immediately responded. I was the first to inquire, so right away I called my husband, who was out picking up yet another Craigslist find for me, lol (bless his heart)and he rushed over to get them. I was so excited because I wanted to distress my own cabinets, so finding the used ones were perfect.

The existing ones were very old and in horrible condition. He came home with the cabinets and, to my dismay, they were laminate white cabinets that had a lot of yellowing. Well I couldn't complain because he and his friend had a full trailer of cabinets ready to be unloaded. The cabinets were brought in, cleaned, and hung. I stared at them for days before I figured out what to do. I thought about a sponging finish, then painting, and then thought, "Why not paint them to look like wood?" I had 3 combinations of colors and did them the same way I had planned to do them if they were wood. I scratched them, sanded spots, and put on a tan base coat, brushed them lightly with white, and then added brown to the battered areas. I love the results and I am now in the process of adding clearcoat.

We have not stained the floors but they will be a dark mahogany color. What I would really love imput on is wall color, thanks.

Job Well Done!
by: Giorgina Devereaux

Congratulations on a job well done! It is great that you have a fabulous husband that helped with this project. How wonderful it is to hear stories like these because you took a chance on doing something that some would be afraid to do. I applaud you for taking the time to rescue these cabinets and put your own mark on them. The light color on your cabinets makes the kitchen appear more spacious and has a Tuscan flair to it. The mahogany stain you have planned for your floors will give your kitchen a warm, rich feel and provide a bit of a contrast with your cabinets.

As for what colors to consider for your kitchen walls, we have several options. The goal is to select a color that will allow all of the elements in your kitchen to blend in nicely and give everything a cohesive look.

Some lovely color choices worth considering for your kitchen are the following:

?Sherwin Williams Toasty 6095
?Sherwin Williams Blonde 6128
?Sherwin Williams Latte 6108
?Sherwin Williams Midday 6695
?Sherwin Williams Armagnac 6354
?Sherwin Williams Amber Wave 6657

All of these colors are warm, with some being neutral. I hope you like them and find one that reflects your personality. They are all lovely choices and some are brighter than others. It depends on whether you prefer a brighter color over a neutral one.

I wish you the very best with your kitchen! Please send us a picture of your kitchen after it is painted so that we can post it on our site.
