Zebra Print Rugs

by Giorgina Devereaux

Zebra print rugs bring an exotic touch to home decor.

These beautiful animals are best known for their distinctive white and black stripes, which come in different patterns and are unique to each individual.

Zebras belong to the Equid (horse) family of the order Perissodactyla (odd-toed ungulates) and although their closest relatives are horses, they have not been domesticated because of their more unpredictable nature and tendency to panic under stress.

These remarkable animals can be found in habitats, such as the grasslands, savannas, woodlands, thorny scrublands, mountains, and coastal hills.

zebra-print-rugs-contemporary-zebra-print-black-and-white-rugTo communicate, a zebra uses high pitched barks and whinnying.  You can tell what mood a zebra is in by looking at its ears.

When a zebra is in a calm, tense, or friendly state, its ears stand erect.  If a zebra is frightened, its ears are pushed forward.  When angry, its ears are pulled backward.

When assessing an area for predators, zebras stand in an alert posture, with their ears erect, head held high, and gazing.  If a predator is spotted, a zebra will bark loudly.  And when tense, a zebra will also snort.

Zebras are herbivores and feed mainly on grasses, but also eat shrubs, herbs, twigs, leaves, and bark.  Since their digestive system is well adapted, it allows them to handle diets of lower nutritional value.

One other interesting fact about the zebra is that when zebras are born, they are brown and white in color.  However, their color changes from brown to black once they are weaned.

Knowing a little bit about this amazingly beautiful animal makes us appreciate even more having a zebra print rug in our home.  It is a lovely compliment to a bare floor in the living, family room, or next to a crackling fireplace.  The contrast between white and black gives it a striking appeal and adds interest to the overall room.
